ST. GEORGE- PowderPuff football is one of Dixie's most exciting events of the year. Whenever football is played, cheerleading is a necessity to increase fan spirit and morale.
Thankfully some muscular, athletic, and definitely good looking boys can fill the cheerleaders place in rallying the crowd. There are no tryouts, no fees, and for sure no one that doesn't enjoy being a cheerleader.
It all starts with signing up at the front office just requiring contact information for the cheer coaches to contact all of the studly boys.
Practices started two weeks before the game. It gave everyone time to prepare for the halftime show and weeded out the cheerleaders that weren't dedicated enough. The first practice started right after school in the dance facility.
At least thirty boys showed up with high aspirations of becoming a Dixie High cheerleader. Everyone was overjoyed and plenty of hip throwing was included in the dance moves. "I love this kind of practice cause I can just stare at my muscles in the mirror the whole time,” said Will DeViney.
Sweat dripped off the cheerleaders faces as they learned how to become some of Dixie's finest men cheerleaders. The second practice was even more challenging with the dance moving at a faster tempo and the team doing more repetitions of moves.
Near the end of practice, Jordan Bickel had decided to try something new for a grand finale that would put the entire stands into a jaw dropping awe. He asked for a couple spotters and went for it, he nailed his first full backflip from flat ground. His excitement brought everyone into a circle of cheering and confidence that led to Casey Hobson and Big Mack also completing the flip.
The problem was now fitting all the beastly men into girls cheerleading outfits. It was a humiliating project to put on and remove the uniforms for most of the boys, but after another hour of practice they could change quickly without ripping the expensive materials.
The game was intense. Girls were getting thrown left and right with injuries for both teams. The testosterone filled cheerleaders were yelling out cries of hope for whoever was carrying the ball. Most of the players on the senior sideline didn't know what to think of the huge cheerleaders. The very disturbing wigs and facial hair added to the amusement of the night. "Your curly wig is beyond creepy!", yelled senior Lauren Christensen.
The men performed many different cheers such as the pyramid and high raise. The skills they learned and practice put into the event was also demonstrated very well by the halftime show. The Pterodactyl was displayed by Mack Peterson while the others stuck with normal routine keeping the fans entertained during the three minute break.
Overall it was a great experience for all of the boys, and the crowd as well. A great way to fill homecoming week with tons of fun.
