Christmas mistletoe is a tradition that has brought kissable moments to couples around the world.
During Christmas time there’s a story that comes with this parasitic plant. Whichever two people that are caught under the plant are supposed to kiss. It is considered to bestow life and fertility.
Senior Austin Barker said he hopes to take advantage of the mistletoe’s cupid like powers, “I want to kiss Bethany Farr under the mistletoe and just make it happen.”
The mistletoe is actually just a plant that grows by attaching itself to a tree or a shrub. The leaves are smooth-edged and oval. Some of these plants are even poisonous. The largest family of mistletoe has more than 900 species. Some are used in medical use and Mistletoe name is also used in culture, folklore, and mythology.
The story and folklore that goes behind this mysterious plant is this: The lady that is said to be standing under the mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed. It could mean a series of things like deep romance or great lasting friendship. If a couple in love kisses under the mistletoe it becomes a promise to marry one another. Today kisses can be exchanged under the mistletoe any time during any holiday season.
The legend behind this is associated with the Goddess Frigga, the goddess of love and beauty. The mistletoe was her sacred plant.
With this eerie plant and the story that is behind it, somehow it has stayed with the holiday season for the previous years and will continue for the years to come.
With that being said, girls if you don’t want to be kissed, don’t stand under the mistletoe this holiday season. Merry Christmas!
