Halloween Myths

Halloween Myths

ST. GEORGE - Halloween is a time for scary stories. One might see little children jumping for joy at the sight of a full cauldron of candy on the front porch of some stranger, and the occasional scream when a live statue jumps out.

Now this holiday isn’t all about fun and candy. People try and spice things up with scary stories and that’s where myths come in.
Some myths are interesting or scary and some are just flat out lame and make you wonder what kind of person came up with that!

So here is one that might be silly or just pee your pants terrifying.

When talking to Dixie High Senior Jordan Christiansen about his favorite/scariest Halloween myths he told me a story about a man named Jack and the Devil. It went like this.

Jack wanted to buy something for his lovely wife so he made a deal with the Devil. The Devil turned into money and when Jack was done buying his item he placed the Devil coin next to a cross so he couldn’t come back and made him promise to not bother Jack for an entire year.

Well naturally the Devil came back in a year to claim Jack's soul but Jack cleverly asked if the Devil could help get an apple out of the tree and then he could have his soul. The Devil obliged but when he was up in the tree Jack carved a cross in it and said the Devil could come down if he would leave Jack alone for a full 10 years.

Over those long 10 years the tree grew around the Devil and sealed him inside. Jack died before the years were up and the Devil had to go back to Hell.

Jack went to heaven but God wouldn’t let him in saying that he was a liar and a deceiver. Jack went to Hell but the Devil wouldn’t let him in. So to this day Jacks soul traverses our world in search for a home and a light within.

That story was told a long time ago and that is why the tradition came around to carve Jack-O-Lanterns! Every time Jack would pass by seeking for a light within a home he would go to the lantern.

So remember to carve those pumpkins to keep him out of your home!

Have a scary and sugar filled Halloween!
