ST. GEORGE - For most people, swimming is an activity of leisure and entertainment. It’s a social relaxation period and an excuse to soak up extra sun rays, but the swimming team is a different story. An average swimming practice consists of 6,000 yards (about 240 laps) and 30 minutes of dry land running exercises.

The cardio and resistance is so elevated, compared to other strength training, that it is rated one of the top workouts to maintain a healthy metabolism and physique. Competitive swimming is arguably one of the most difficult sports that our high school has to offer.

Practices usually run about two hours from 3:00 to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. "Every so often we will do some weight training on Saturday mornings, but time in the pool is the most important thing", says Andrew Gonzalez. Most people overlook the difficulty and dedication that the swimmers have for the sport. From a recent survey, surprisingly 3 out of 10 people didn't even know that Dixie had a swimming team.

For both Dixie and Snow Canyon swimmers, the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center is home. The same coaches are used for both teams and swimming together in the same lanes has not been a problem.

A new head coach was introduced this year. Coach Kyle is bound and determined to develop a high ratio of state qualifying times in the program for our newly rated 3A school.

The average practice consists of a warm up, two or three sets depending on difficulty, and a warm down.

The warm up always starts with a set number of yards that is swam for stretching out and priming the muscles for an intense workout. The sets, or middle bulk of the practice, are specifically designed to optimize the performance of the swimmers at their next events.

The warm down is to put the muscles in a rebuilding mode and supply oxygen filled blood for the best recovery for the upcoming events. Designing a practice is very difficult, but the effectiveness of the workouts is shown in time improvements.

Swimming is a great sport for physical fitness and it is highly recommended because of the low stress on joints and ligaments.

If you are willing to put in the time and effort, the swimming team could be your favorite extracurricular activity.
